The Maundy Thursday liturgy begins with a profound reflection on the final meal Jesus shared with his loyal disciples. He broke the bread and shared the wine to establish the Holy Communion for all of his faithful followers. Following the service, we place the consecrated bread within St Mary’s Aisle for a period of very quiet prayer. We keep watch until the late hour of eleven to mirror the lonely struggle of Jesus in Gethsemane’s garden. The atmosphere shifts dramatically as we strip the cathedral of its beauty to represent his sudden and painful arrest. We leave the building in total darkness to acknowledge the heavy weight of betrayal by his most trusted friends. This moving transition forces us to confront the reality of abandonment and the fragility of our own human loyalty.
