Holy Week 29/3/2026 to 5/4/2026

St Gregory the Great

Holy Week Northampton – The programme for Holy Week is on the Newsletter, but the first place to begin is with the Penitential Liturgies. On Monday night it is at the Cathedral at 7.00 pm, and on Tuesday night at St Gregory’s, also at 7.00pm. There will also be opportunity for Confession after the morning Mass on Wednesday. The three main liturgies of the ‘Triduum’ (The three Holy Days) are best seen as a single liturgy, and therefore it is recommended that our reconciliation before Easter be done before we enter those three days; so Wednesday is the last advertised opportunity.

Maundy Thursday morning

Please note that there is no Eucharistic Adoration on Maundy Thursday morning, but there is an opportunity for parents / carers and children to celebrate the day between 10.00 am and 12 noon. There is also an invitation from the Bishop for us all to attend the Mass of Chrism in the Cathedral at 11 00 am.

The main liturgy at St Gregory’s is the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7.00 pm, which is followed by a time of watching and prayer with the Lord which continues until midnight. We are all challenged by the words of Jesus: “Could you not watch with me one hour” (Mark 14:37) and are invited to spend an hour at some point between the time Mass ends until midnight, praying with Jesus. This can be a good time to read in a prayerful way the last words of Jesus at the Last Supper. (John chapters 13 to 17)

Good Friday

On Good Friday again there is no Mass at 9.00, but again, there are activities for parents / carers and children from 10.00 am until 12 noon. There is also the ecumenical Walk of Witness which begins at St Albans on Broadmead Avenue at 10.15 am and passes St Gregory’s at about 11.00 am. There is a general invitation to join this walk, which continues to the Church in the Park and ends at about 12 noon. The main liturgy of the day is at 3.00 pm; the time that Jesus gives his life for us on the Cross.

Holy Saturday

is a day of watching and waiting, but also for the Church, a time of preparation for the celebration of the joy of the Resurrection. In the Jewish calendar (which Jesus and the early Church kept), the new day begins not a midnight but at sunset on the night before,

Easter Day Sunday – Holy Week Northampton

begins with the Vigil liturgy which starts at 9.00 pm, and is the most important liturgy of the year.
