Blessing – The York Mystery Plays begin with God creating the cosmos, establishing a divine order meant for eternal, holy worship. The Tanners’ Guild traditionally staged this opening pageant, which depicts the celestial hierarchy and the origins of dark evil. God forms nine distinct orders of angels, placing the brilliant Lucifer above all others to lead the heavenly choir. However, this favored angel allows vanity to corrupt his spirit as he seeks the reverence due only to God. His prideful rebellion triggers a swift divine judgment, resulting in a violent fall from the heights of the heavens.
The Fall and Transformation
Lucifer and his rebellious followers descend into a dismal pit, losing their radiant beauty to become hideous, scarred demons. They wallow in eternal despair while bickering over their tragic fate, blaming their leader for this sudden, painful exile. A chaotic brawl erupts among the fallen spirits as they realize their former glory has been stripped away forever. Meanwhile, the loyal angels remain in the light, acknowledging the justice of God’s firm and necessary sovereign actions. They witness the start of a new plan, as God prepares to create a physical world for future individuals.
Creation of the Earth
The Creator begins his work on Earth by separating the darkness from the light, forming the first ever day. He intends to build a paradise where every human desire is realized, starting with the fundamental cycle of time. This dramatic cycle of rebellion and creation returns to the city streets for several special public performances this summer. Audiences can catch these historic plays on June 28th and July 5th, 2026, within the vibrant York city center. Two additional twilight shows are scheduled for the Market on June 30th and July 1st, 2026, during the evening.  Ash Wednesday https://easter-events.co.uk  Easter Egg Hunt – https://easter-events.co.uk Holy Week, https://easter-events.co.uk – Easter Stories, https://easter-events.co.uk
